Dufield Pond Conservation Area is a 685-acre preserve located in Woodstock, Illinois. The preserve contains a 43-acre pond, which is the centerpiece of the property. The pond is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, and catfish, and is open to fishing year-round. In addition to the pond, the property features wetlands, prairies, woodlands, and a 2.5-mile loop trail.
History
The Dufield Pond Conservation Area was acquired by the McHenry County Conservation District in 1969. The district has since worked to improve the property for both wildlife and human visitors. In recent years, they have added a nature center, an ADA-accessible fishing pier, and picnic shelters.
Wildlife
The Dufield Pond Conservation Area is home to a variety of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, red-winged blackbirds, and beavers. The property also provides habitat for a number of rare and threatened species, such as the Blanding’s turtle and the Hine’s emerald dragonfly.
Recreation
In addition to fishing, the Dufield Pond Conservation Area offers several other recreational opportunities. Visitors can enjoy hiking, picnicking, birdwatching, and nature photography. The preserve also hosts a number of educational programs throughout the year.
