Woodstock Opera House

Woodstock Opera House is a performing arts center located in Woodstock, Illinois. The theater hosts a variety of performances including music, dance, theater, and comedy.

History

The opera house was built in 1889 by architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee, who also designed the Ravinia Pavilion in Highland Park. The building is constructed of red brick and features a Romanesque Revival style.

The first performance at the opera house was The Bohemian Girl, an operetta by Michael Balfe, on September 26, 1889.

Since its opening, the opera house has undergone several renovations. In 1953, the interior of the theater was redesigned in an Art Deco style. In 2000, the theater underwent a $5 million restoration, which reverted the interior back to its original 1889 design.

The opera house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of the League of Historic American Theaters.
