Facilities

The award-winning district includes neighborhood playgrounds, baseball and softball fields, a golf course and marina, tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, skating rinks, horseshoes, walking/jogging and biking paths, and an 18-hole golf course. The district also has the Prairie Lakes Community Center and Fitness Center, Leisure Center Health Club, Des Plaines School of Dance, Creative Corners Preschool, and the Des Plaines Teen Center.

Other facilities at Lake Park include the Memorial Pavilion and a fishing pier that overlooks beautiful Lake Opeka. The pier features both wet and dry docking for residents’ boats. The pavilion hosts the Live at the Lake summer concert series and the community band.

Des Plaines is home to numerous shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Many large and small businesses have chosen to make downtown Des Plaines their home. The city’s historic buildings and charming streetscape are major attractions. Various public transportation options are available, including the Miner St. corridor, which offers access to several Pace bus lines and Metra’s Union Pacific Northwest line.

Picnic Areas

The beautiful 76-acre park boasts a stunning 18-hole golf course, walking trails, picnic areas, and the spectacular Lake Opeka. The park also hosts a number of events throughout the summer including music, movies, and more.

The park’s ‘C1’ and ‘D’ picnic areas are surrounded by mature trees and receive filtered sunlight during most of the day. Both locations are near open shelters and restroom facilities.

In addition to the new playground and family play area, there is a new picnic shelter, fishing pier and gazebo, memorial trees and benches, naturalized landscaping, a sensory garden, and native planting gardens. The Park District purchased this land from the Good Shepherd Church in 2007 through a grant from OSLAD. It now connects the rest of the park to the north.

Boat Rentals

The park offers a variety of boat rentals to get out on the water and experience the lake. You can rent a paddle boat or kayak for a fun family outing, or go on a sailboat ride. You can also rent a power boat to take a larger group out on the lake for some summertime fun.

The Lake Opeka Marina provides both wet and dry moorings for local boat owners. The Marina is home to the Des Plaines Yacht Club, which holds regattas throughout the summer and teaches sailing lessons for kids of all ages.

The Park District is a leader in combatting cabin fever caused by the COVID-19 “stay-at-home” order by providing gardening, golfing, and lake activities for Des Plaines residents to enjoy. Garden plots are available for residents, and the park has a fleet of boats and bikes to help get people out and about.

Fishing

Whether you’re a fan of fishing or just enjoying nature, this park has something for everyone. The area is surrounded by farmland, woodland, and natural prairie land with serene lakes, tranquil rivers, and relaxing picnic areas.

The 76-acre Lake Opeka is enclosed by Lake Park, where you can enjoy a walk around the lake, play golf on the public course or take a paddle boat out on the water. The park also offers a playground, jogging paths, and a sensory garden.

Fishing is a popular activity on the lake and it is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, white crappie, and northern pike. Make sure you follow state and Cook County regulations and fishing license requirements. You can purchase a license from the Lake Park Municipal Marina. Discover more interesting articles.
